Just like the average campaign of, is packed full of side quests for the party to take on. While some connect to the main epic quest to save Faerûn, others can be fun distractions that result in awesome equipment or buffs. But in a game as big as, which side quests are the best ones to watch out for each playthrough?

Each Act of will have essential quests that the party don't want to miss, given just how much there is to do in the game. The best side quests are ones that show off the setting's complexity and immerse the party in the lore of the Forgotten Realms. Whether completed quickly or spanning multiple Acts, these side quests are always worth checking out.

When exploring the Blighted Village in 's Act 1, many parties will find the strange hidden cellar under the ruined Apothecary. Inside the secret laboratory is a very peculiar book that seems to give off an evil aura, this book is the Necromancy of Thay. Keeping the book leads to a great quest that has the brilliant rewards of two new spells and a permanent buff. When reading it, the character will have to pass three Wisdom saving throws (DC 10, 15, and 20); however, if they are successful, they will gain as a ritual spell.

Success will also grant the Forbidden Knowledge permanent buff, which give a plus one to Wisdom saving throws and ability checks. In Act 3. the Necromancy of Thay can be unlocked further by either paying the Mystic Carrion or finding the Tharchiate Codex in the vault of Sorcerous Sundries. After passing a final DC 20 Wisdom check, the character will gain the spell, which allows them to summon four ghouls once per long rest.

The Tharchiate Codex is in the Elminster section of the vault and can be unlocked by opening the doors in the order of Silverhand — Evocation — Wish.
