Last week brought the unexpected news that Flappy Bird, the 2014 viral hit, is making a comeback. But the game's creator Dong Nguyen was notably absent from the announcement, and the more you look into the apparent reboot the murkier it gets. Trademark shenanigans, a new «foundation» behind the relaunch, and the unmistakeable whiff of crypto: oh my.
A decade ago Flappy Bird, a crude but colourful autorun-style game, became a viral hit on mobile. It was so successful, in fact, that it became a millstone for its creator, Vietnamese programmer Dong Nguyen, who at the height of the game's popularity (and profitability) made the unprecedented decision to remove the game from sale entirely. NGuyen would later rationalise his decision thus: «I can call Flappy Bird a success of mine. But it also ruins my simple life. So now I hate it.»
A Texas judge denied Media Matters for America’s request for a dismissal on Thursday allowing X’s lawsuit over alleged anti-semitic and racist content. The Verge reported that Northern District of Texas Judge Reed O’Connor dismissed the request for a dismissal paving the way for X’s lawsuit against Media Matters to continue.

Back in August 2022, chip design firm Arm filed a lawsuit in the US against Qualcomm, demanding that it destroy specific Arm-based technologies. With no progress made in the case, Qualcomm went on to use said technologies in its Snapdragon X processors, the only chips currently rated for use in Microsoft's new Copilot+ AI PCs. Given how much the PC industry is hoping AI will revive a somewhat flagged market, will this ongoing legal battle ultimately stop the AI PC from ever becoming successful?
