Xbox’s September update adds the ability to pre-download game updates

Microsoft has detailed Xbox’s September update, which is available out now.

On the console side, this month’s update introduces the ability to pre-download game updates.

The feature lets players download updates for games early, so that when the update is set to go live it can simply be installed and played.

It’s currently supported by games including Sea of Thieves, Minecraft and Cassette Beasts, and Microsoft said to “expect many more titles to support it soon”.

On the PC front, September’s update has made Game Bar Compact Mode available for all players.

Described by Microsoft as “a new mode optimised for smaller screens and Windows handhelds”, it lets users “view recently played games, access common game launchers and other gaming utilities, and explore the Widget Store, where you can discover and manage widget applications”.

Microsoft has also announced plans to combine the Xbox and Xbox Game Pass mobile apps, with the update available today for beta members and rolling out soon for everyone else.

The platform holder revealed the Ghost Cipher Special Edition Xbox Wireless Controller on Tuesday, when it also launched transparent Cipher Series top cases and chromatic D-pad/paddles for Elite Series 2 controllers via Xbox Design Lab.

Microsoft is gearing up to launch the digital-only Xbox Series X and two other console variants in October.
