Frostpunk made a name for itself in 2018 when the designers took a simple icey base builder and gave it higher stakes, aesthetics and intent than other games. It was a short game but brought an immense amount of depth. Frostpunk 2 aims to expand and get players back to that concept through a system that presents players with more significant stakes and risks than ever before.
It’s been a little bit over a month since early access for World of Warcraft's latest expansion, The War Within, launched. In that time, I’ve leveled characters, geared up, done a ton of dungeons, raided, and a plethora of delves. Now that the first season has started — although M+ and Mythic raiding don’t begin until September 17th — it’s finally time to take stock of where we are and put a score to this expansion. Sins of a Solar Empire 2 is an intricate real-time strategy 4X with a detailed combat system, a multitude of galactic factions, and spinning solar systems. It’s a technical game that took a while to dig into, and after spending 2 weeks with it, I’ve gotten a good feel for how it works.

Embracing a new model, these expansions may be more compact, but they're packed with content and will drop yearly, promising a steady stream of adventures. After the recent preview for Janthir Wilds, I was keen to dive into everything and see if they could improve on the foundation they set with Secrets of the Obscure.
When Elden Ring released in 2022, I was a bit apprehensive at first. I’m typically not a fan of FromSoftware’s games; not because I don’t like challenging single-player content but I often find the slower pace combined with frustrating boss mechanics to simply not be fun. That being said, Elden Ring ended up as my game of the year in 2022, and I still think it’s the best open world game ever created. With that in mind, Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree expands upon almost everything from the main game and makes it even better.
It’s been more than 30 years since the original Alone in the Dark made its debut, and now we’re coming full circle with the game that helped define the survival horror genre. Clearly having an influence on Resident Evil with its puzzles, weight management system and overall creepy theme, the remake of Alone in the Dark has definitely borrowed a few things from more recent games in Capcom’s series. Unfortunately, Alone in the Dark can’t decide what it truly wants to be and falls a little flat by the time it wraps everything up.
I had high expectations for Skull and Bones, anticipating a stellar “AAAA” pirate experience: peg legs, sliders—the whole nine yards. However, my hopes were quickly dashed as I emerged from a botched naval battle, coughing up sand on an unfamiliar island. Surveying my reflection in a broken barrel on the shoreline, I sifted through the limited presets available to customize my pirate avatar.
Final Fantasy VII REBIRTH has an odd task as the middle entry in an eventual three-part RPG series. REBIRTH, for its part, has to simultaneously bring some resolution to the lingering questions brought on by 2020’s Final Fantasy VII REMAKE, set up the final chapter in the series, while also telling a compelling story in its own right.
