Lowering Elden Ring's difficulty would attract more players but would also 'break the game itself,' says director Hidetaka Miyazaki

The launch of Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree means, among other things, a resurrection of the timeless debate over difficulty in Dark Souls games. In the eyes of many soulslikers, Elden Ring was notably gentler than its predecessors because if you're getting hammered by one demigod clown or another, you can always take off, do something else for a while, and come back later when you're better equipped to clean house.

The latest Space Marine 2 gameplay overview promises 'seemingly endless waves' of Tyranids, chill hangouts on the Battle Barge

I can't explain why, but I've always suspected that Space Marines, under all the power armor heavy plating, would be alright to hang out with. There's a kind of genetically-modified, ritually-weaponized «dudes rock» energy there that I can appreciate. And based on the Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 gameplay overview trailer released yesterday, it looks like I'll be able to test my theory firsthand. At last: a game that gives us a chance to see how the Emperor's biggest sons spend their downtime.

Shadows: Awakening, an isometric RPG where you play a soul-sucking demon, is free on GOG

You'll probably be playing Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree this weekend. Hell, you're probably playing it right now, and not even reading this. But if you are reading this, and you are not playing Erdtree over the weekend, and you're looking for something else to jump into instead, allow me to suggest Shadows: Awakening.

Zero-G PvP shooter that sold 100K in a day is closing after a year—publisher blames developer, developer blames them right back, players just review bomb it

Boundary is a multiplayer space shooter where the pitch is simple: PvP in zero-G. The game was announced in 2019 by developer Surgical Scalpels, and would eventually launch in early access in April 2023, at which time PC Gamer's Tyler Wilde found it a weirdly compelling take on the competitive FPS: «Space is really not the ideal location for anything humans do, nevermind tactical infantry battles, but it is quite a lot of fun.»

Becalmed at sea for over a decade, this piratical hack-and-slash game is releasing later this year

Who among us hasn't heard the tale of Captain Blood, the seafaring scoundrel who—according to the press release I'm looking at—was «the most manly pirate captain ever to drink grog while romancing maidens across the Spanish main?» Well, presumably most of us, because the last time anyone saw his game was in 2010 before it disappeared and went into indefinite development hiatus.

Andy Chalk - Hidetaka Miyazaki - Miyazaki 'went a little too far' with Elden Ring's poison swamps but says he learned a lesson, which unfortunately is that he needed to come up with new and different ways to kill everyone - pcgamer.com

Miyazaki 'went a little too far' with Elden Ring's poison swamps but says he learned a lesson, which unfortunately is that he needed to come up with new and different ways to kill everyone

Apart from a wasted hour or so dabbling in Dark Souls, Elden Ring was my first soulslike, and so I think it's understandable that when I found myself standing in the muck in the middle of Caelid, my immediate reaction was, «This is bullshit.» I was surprised to find out later that it was also tradition: Director Hidetaka Miyazaki has been throwing these things in since the very first Dark Souls because, apparently, he just can't help himself.

'We just happened to release it into the market at the right time': Even after Elden Ring's DLC victory lap, FromSoftware's Hidetaka Miyazaki still wears the 'soulslike' crown with humility

It's not an understatement to say that FromSoftware changed the gaming industry with Demon's Souls in 2009 and, later, Dark Souls in 2011—proving that challenging, punishing games can absolutely find mainstream success.

Cyberpunk life sim Nivalis is now set to come out in spring 2025, and I'm more excited for it than ever

I'm not generally a life-sim guy but I am very eager to dive into Nivalis. A big part of that arises from the strength of Cloudpunk, the previous game from developer Ion Lands, which I really liked, but Nivalis itself—based on the admittedly not-a-whole-lot we've seen of it so far—looks brilliant too.
