Dolphin emulator launches RetroAchievements support for more than 100 classic GameCube games, crashing its servers in the process

Nintendo GameCube and Wii emulator Dolphin is having a big month. Just two weeks ago the Dolphin team announced that its development is now so rock solid they were doing away with the concept of «stable» builds entirely and moving to a rolling release cycle, taking the emulator out of the «5.0» build era that started back in 2016. Today it's adding a long-requested feature: integration with RetroAchievements, a community-driven project that adds Xbox- or Steam-style achievements to thousands of older games.

This Witcher 3 mod that lets you play as a custom character or a whole new sorceress class is super promising, but maybe wait a few months for it to iron out the kinks

One of the great strengths of The Witcher 3 is its star, Big Geralt—a character we as players get to guide through the game's major events, but with a defined history and personality giving those decisions added heft. Geralt isn't a blank amnesiac Chosen One like so many RPG heroes, and I love that—it's clear the writing, acting, and quests are all built around who he is and how he can leave his mark on the world around him. That focus makes a new mod for the game called Custom Player Characters all the more impressive, because it does a pretty dang good job of turning Geralt into any other character you'd like to play as.

Star Wars Outlaws' maps won't initially be blanketed in Ubisoft's infamous map icons because your character Kay 'hasn't seen the galaxy' and 'doesn't know everything' yet

When we got our hands on Star Wars Outlaws last month, our first impression was that it's playing things too safe. We didn't get to see its open world, but we did notice a lot of mechanics borrowed from other Ubisoft games, from Watch Dogs to Assassin's Creed. Now in an interview with IGN, Outlaws' developer Massive Entertainment has gone into more detail about how it's approaching open world Star Wars—with at least one encouraging change from the well-worn Ubisoft playbook.

Ubisoft says a Star Wars Outlaws planet is the size of '2 or 3' Assassin's Creed Odyssey map zones put together, which takes about 5 minutes 'nonstop' on a speeder to cross

It's not the size of the open world that counts, it's what's inside it—but I'll admit I've been curious to see how Ubisoft plans to tackle the open world maps for multiple Star Wars planets. This is a notoriously tough nut for space exploration games to crack. BioWare tried to make Mass Effect 1's barren planets more interesting in Andromeda, only to fill them with generic, cookie cutter quests that went over about as well as the facial animations. Bethesda justified Starfield's largely dull procedurally generated planets as realistic. What should we expect from Ubisoft, which has made some truly massive open world maps, bringing that scale to the whole galaxy?

Team Fortress 2 players are not loving the announcement of TF2 DLC for Funko Fusion instead of, y'know, TF2: 'Genuinely would rather bots continue to overrun the game than this happen'

As Team Fortress 2 players continue begging Valve to take a more active role in dealing with the game's botting problems, it is maybe not a good look that the first new Team Fortress 2-related DLC announced in years is for another game entirely (via Wario64). And not just any other game: it's Funko Fusion, which answers the question «What if you made something like Lego Star Wars but out of garbage?»

After a Shadow of the Erdtree-induced hiatus, Elden Ring's Seamless Co-op mod is already back with support for the expansion

After being briefly borked by the release of Shadow of the Erdtree, Elden Ring's Seamless Co-op mod is now ready to use in the expansion. Passing a message from mod creator Luke Yui yesterday, Seamless Co-op Discord moderator Dalvik wrote that «While not perfect, it has reached a state where it can be used to play Elden Ring and the DLC in co-op.»

FromSoftware's boss doesn't talk much about his personal life, but he now gets recognized in public, which Miyazaki says 'keeps me on my best behavior'

When Hidetaka Miyazaki flew to Los Angeles for this year's Summer Game Fest, his very presence became a news story. Some speculated that Miyazaki was there to reveal a new game (though he was really just there to promote Shadow of the Erdtree), but it was also a story simply because it mattered to people. A selfie taken in the hotel got more than a million views on Twitter. Even though his games have been popular for more than a decade at this point, that sort of fame is new for the Dark Souls creator.

The father of Final Fantasy teamed back up with Square Enix after 21 years to break his latest RPG out of Apple Arcade jail

Jailbreak! During Tuesday's Nintendo Direct presentation, a trailer for Japanese RPG Fantasian: Neo Dimension revealed that the 2021 Apple Arcade exclusive is finally coming to PC. Its creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, best known for helming the Final Fantasy series from 1987 until his departure from Squaresoft in 2003, had some surprise help in freeing Fantasian from its mobile exclusivity: Final Fantasy 14 producer Yoshi-P.
