If you get kicked out of your Steam Family, the slot is locked for a year, so you'd better get along—here's how Steam's new family sharing system works

Steam's old Family Sharing feature, which allowed members of the same household to play each other's Steam games, has been replaced with the new Steam Families system, which graduated from beta this week. The revamped system does the same thing as the old one, but adds new features and comes with some new stipulations, including a region restriction.

Ara: History Untold looks a lot like Civilization until you realize there's no hexes: 'We're not playing a board game, we're actually trying to simulate some of what we see in real life'

As much as it resembles Civilization, soon-to-release grand strategy game Ara: History Untold is different in some big ways. The biggest might be its simultaneous turn resolution, which is detailed in one of developer Oxide's dev diaries. That one I clocked a while back, but I somehow missed another major difference even though it shows up in almost every screenshot: Ara's map isn't divided into a regular grid or hexagon pattern.

EA says giving videogame characters 'life and persistence' outside of games with AI is a 'profound opportunity,' which is the kind of talk that leads to dangerous Holodeck malfunctions

Like so many other companies, EA is going all-in on generative AI. At an investor's conference today, the game development giant talked at length about the ways AI is supposed to transform its business, and chief strategy officer Mihir Vaidya demoed some of the generative AI concepts the company has been working on.

The next Battlefield game has been in 'nearly daily' playtesting for 'well over a year,' and a large-scale community test is planned for early 2025

'Specialists will not be coming back': The next Battlefield will emulate Battlefields 3 and 4, 'the pinnacle' of the series, says EA

I liked Battlefield 2042's experimental character—lonely hikes across its giant 128-player maps reminded me of how awesome the scale of Battlefield 1942 felt back in 2002—but I held a minority opinion on that one. For the next Battlefield, the series' new boss aims to recapture what he calls the «peak of Battlefield-ness» found in Battlefield 3 and 4.

Valve politely asks that you only use Steam's family sharing for 'close family members' in a 'household,' but let's be real: everyone shares their games with Discord friends

Steam's latest family sharing system, just called Steam Families, comes with lots of rules designed to keep it from turning into a game lending free-for-all. Year-long cooldown periods prevent us from joining and leaving Steam Family groups as often as we want, for example.

The company behind a 'mental health action shooter' envisions a health insurance-funded 'golden age' for gaming, and just got FDA clearance to treat stress

Imagine this: You tell your doctor that you're struggling with stress, and she sends you home with instructions to play videogames every week. Even better, your health insurance is going to cover a subscription to the game service, and maybe even a VR headset to play them on. That's the vision of Seattle-based company Deepwell DTx, and it's making real progress: the company's biofeedback software development kit for games just received FDA clearance for «over-the-counter treatments for the reduction of stress and as an adjunctive treatment for high blood pressure.»
