Ted Litchfield - A follow-up to the legendary Disco Elysium might have been ready to play within the next year—ZA/UM's devs loved it, management canceled it and laid off the team: 'For a while it seemed like miracles were possible, and with them redemption' - pcgamer.com

A follow-up to the legendary Disco Elysium might have been ready to play within the next year—ZA/UM's devs loved it, management canceled it and laid off the team: 'For a while it seemed like miracles were possible, and with them redemption'

When members of artist collective turned game developer Studio ZA/UM thanked Marx and Engels in their 2019 Game Awards acceptance speech for the RPG triumph Disco Elysium, I felt like I was looking at the future, the ecstatic debut of my new favorite developer, but that isn't how things panned out. Disco Elysium has been #1 on our yearly Top 100 games list four years in a row, but for much of that time, ZA/UM has been engulfed in an existential crisis.

One of my top early access games is finally getting a second level: a 3-hour underground factory-city with an overhauled, Thief-style stealth system, a new RPG hub area, and an explanation for where all those FPS crates come from

I've been a Fortune's Run freak since first playing its bafflingly good demo level two years ago, and after launching into early access with a single, sprawling space station playground, we're finally seeing what comes next: an underground factory and settlement with a projected three-hour runtime and accompanying sneaking overhaul set to arrive in August.

Turn-based tactics game Tactical Breach Wizards has been on our radar for some time, but we don't have much longer to wait on this whimsical take on the House that XCOM Built: a new trailer at the PC Gaming Show revealed Tactical Breach Wizards's August 20 release date, while a free demo of the game is now available on Steam.

I had less than zero expectations for the Perfect Dark reboot, but it looks like the 2020s answer to Deus Ex I've been waiting for

Microsoft's long-simmering Perfect Dark reboot has been in the works for so long, with such a fraught development history, I'd basically written the whole thing off. But in a first look gameplay trailer at today's Xbox Games Showcase, it looked bafflingly good, a cyberpunk FPS, if not a full-on immersive sim that could fill the Deus Ex-shaped hole in my heart.

First revealed at today's Xbox Games Showcase, id Software's follow-up to 2020's Doom Eternal will be a medieval flavored prequel called Doom: The Dark Ages. The brief trailer showed off Doom Guy's new look (complete with furry Game of Thrones cape!), some gameplay snippets, and a planned 2025 release window.

Everyone tries to crib Breath of the Wild's vibes and open world to no avail, but the former lead of Dragon Age is finally giving me what I really want: Zelda's wild physics and ability to climb anywhere

Eternal Strands, the first game from former Dragon Age lead Mike Laidlaw's studio Yellow Brick Games, has unveiled a new gameplay trailer at the Future Games Show today. Seeing more of it in action, I'm getting hopeful that somebody is finally cribbing the right answers off Breath of the Wild's test, mashing up immersive sim systems with action RPG combat like god intended.

One of my favorite games from this year's summer showcases, a peaceful adventure where you explore a desert planet in a beat up van, has a demo available right now

The more I saw of Caravan SandWitch's trailer in today's Wholesome Direct showcase, the more I dug it. The «narrative-driven exploration adventure» has this uniquely desolate sci-fi look that reminds me of some of my recent favorites, while it also has a demo available to try right now on Steam.

I was shocked to find out that not only is Hyper Light Drifter's studio working on a second new project, it's a return to 2D with action inspired by 'platform fighters' like Super Smash Bros

Revealed at today's Devolver showcase, Possessors—stylized as «Possessor(s)»—is yet another new game from Heart Machine, the creators of Hyper Light Drifter and Solar Ash. After pivoting to full 3D action for Solar Ash and the upcoming roguelike Hyper Light Breaker, the studio's gone back to its 2D action roots, but with a surprise twist: the singleplayer game will have combat inspired by platform fighters like Super Smash Bros and Multiversus.
