Robin Valentine in gaming news

I'm slightly less panicked about Dragon Age: The Veilguard after seeing 24 seconds of gameplay

I wasn't expecting to see Dragon Age: The Veilguard turn up at the Xbox Games Showcase over the weekend ahead of the gameplay reveal it had already planned for tomorrow. But turn up it did, with a CG trailer that had a lot of fans, including me, very nervous about the plastic-y, poreless character designs. Partly to quell that public panic, I'm willing to bet, BioWare just gave us a «sneak peak» at 24 seconds of the planned 15+ minute gameplay reveal tomorrow. Everyone take ten deep breaths. It looks better—probably.

Has Dragon Age lost its identity, or am I just being grumpy about BioWare’s new take on it?

Let me be very clear right out of the gate, I'm owed absolutely nothing from EA, BioWare or the Dragon Age series. Just because I've played every Dragon Age game to date, and consider the series one of the great videogame events of my life, that doesn't make me entitled to anything—and it's certainly not up to me the direction the next game in the series, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, takes.

With a roguelike time loop twist, Every Day We Fight takes a whole new approach to the turn-based strategy genre

We've all had that experience in XCOM where you're so determined to get yourself out of an impossible situation that you just keep reloading your save and trying different approaches as your soldiers die over and over. Now imagine that instead of that just being an embarrassing memory, it's the basis for a whole new approach to the genre.

Assassin's Creed Shadows' dual protagonists look ready to turn the series' recent identity crisis into a strength

Even as someone who's had a lot of fun with the modern run of Assassin's Creed games, I have to admit they've been having a bit of an identity crisis. The common refrain is «Is this series even about stealth anymore?», and certainly most recent major entry Valhalla, essentially an RPG about a towering Viking warrior, felt about as far from the series' origins as you could get. Shorter entry Mirage was in theory a redressing of the balance, though even that felt oddly tentative about its return to Assassin's Creed's sneaky roots.

Is it just me, or do the newly revealed companions of Dragon Age: The Veilguard look like they're in a hero shooter?

After so long with nothing but vague teasers, it's a relief to finally see something substantial of long-awaited sequel Dragon Age: The Veilguard (formerly Dreadwolf), even if it is just a CG trailer. But I'm not sure that the vibes are quite right here.

Baldur's Gate 3 speedrunner asks the important question: How many people can you bang in a single playthrough?

My honour mode playthrough continues to crawl through act one at a snail's pace, but players and speedrunners who've repeatedly sprinted through the mahoosive RPG are still finding new ways to replay Baldur's Gate 3. You may have seen the sex% speedrun category, but have you seen the BG3 body count run? And no, before you ask, it's not that kind of body count.

A new throwback RPG is so good, it's won praise from Larian boss Swen Vincke: 'I’m flying to LA next week and plan to play it the entire flight'

Retro-style RPG Skald: Against the Black Priory is a game that's almost snuck up on us with how good it is. Its VGA-style color palette and pixel art graphics harken back to an earlier age of CRPG history—one even earlier than the late '90s Fallout/Baldur's Gate heyday that continues to define the genre—and it pays homage to the oft-forgotten Ultima series. Skald is a niche product to be sure, but it's also found an advocate in one of the most prominent figures in gaming: Larian CEO Swen Vincke.
