Marvel Rivals' developers apparently have no limits on what comic book characters can be added to the upcoming hero shooter - as long as they come from a Marvel story, of course.
was an evolution over its predecessors in many ways, from its expanded open-world map — which went beyond Manhattan to include Brooklyn and Queens — to its improved traversal with the option for more physics-based web-swinging, or gliding high above the skyscrapers with the new web wings. However, there were some areas where Insomniac cut content that was present in and, most notably in with regards to the heroes' suits and gadgets, and one of these cut elements could have robbed us of a cool crossover feature with .
When was announced back in September 2021 and was confirmed to be a part of Insomniac's Marvel Universe alongside the games, it wasn't too long before people started speculating about what other Marvel characters Logan could run into on his adventure. After all, the games, while primarily solo stories that focus on Peter Parker and Miles Morales, had plenty of Easter eggs for characters such as the Avengers, Daredevil, Dr. Strange, Black Panther, and more, so it seemed inevitable that would have nods to other mutants, most likely the X-Men.
Insomniac's games take place eight years into Peter Parker's time as a superhero, with him already having graduated college and balancing protecting the city with other adult responsibilities. This gave players a version of the character who was notably older than his movie and TV counterparts, as most recent TV shows and both Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland's depictions of the character showed him as a high school student or just shortly after graduating — even though Garfield's version graduated early in, he wasn't shown starting college — and with the exception of the first part of the 2002 movie, the Tobey Maguire-starring movies have largely shown Peter as being college-aged, matching his age in the 90s and 2000s animated series.
In recent years, Insomniac Games has worked with Marvel to develop the acclaimed games, which have been praised for their storytelling, graphics, and gameplay, with both Peter Parker and Miles Morales' superpowers being faithfully recreated across an open-world New York, and so when the studio announced that it would be expanding its take on the Marvel Universe beyond the web-slingers with , there was plenty of hype for the title. The X-Men have long been a Marvel mainstay — except for that period where the MCU couldn't use them due to Fox owning the rights, and Marvel looked to try setting up Inhumans to replace them, which fortunately didn't stick — and it had been far too long since they took the spotlight in gaming, with the bomb that was in 2011 being the last AAA title solely focused on the mutant team, so I was looking forward to seeing them return with Insomniac at the helm.

Insomniac's games have included a wealth of suits from different types of media that the web-slinging superhero has appeared in over the last six decades, offering players the chance to explore its open-world Manhattan map — with Queens and Brooklyn added in — in their favorite Spider-suits. While Insomniac's adaptations of many of these designs were met with high praise from fans, considering just how many comic artists have drawn the hero over the years, players will still have a preference when it comes to specific elements such as eyepieces of spider emblems.
Assassin's Creed Shadows will be the first new entry since 2020's Valhalla. In that game, players had to choose at the start whether to play with a female or male main character (Eivor Varinsdottir), but in the new installment, there will be two separate protagonists: the shinobi Naoe and the samurai Yasuke.
