Ultrakill dev says it's fine to pirate his game if you don't have money to spare: 'Culture shouldn't exist only for those who can afford it'

I think we can all agree that piracy is basically an inevitability for any piece of software. For years now, we've been living in an era where Denuvo gets cracked so quickly for new games that it's not even worth running a headline about it. But while piracy might be inevitable, the question remains: is it morally acceptable? I mean, sure—according to Ultrakill dev Arsi «Hakita» Patala. Just make sure you tell people if you like it. Hakita made his piracy position clear on Twitter earlier this week, quoting a user who posted a cell phone screenshot of Ultrakill being transferred from a .zip file with the caption «i ❤️ pirating indie games.» While he made sure to say you should support indie devs if you have the means, Hakita was more or less cool with it.

Geoff Keighley - Lincoln Carpenter - Summer Game Fest will focus on existing games, so don't hype yourself up for 'games that are years and years out,' says Geoff Keighley - pcgamer.com

Summer Game Fest will focus on existing games, so don't hype yourself up for 'games that are years and years out,' says Geoff Keighley

In the wake of E3's demise, Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest has emerged as its self-appointed heir. SGF livestreams in years past have brought big reveals like 2021's Elden Ring gameplay, and we should expect more of that kind of thing this year, according to Keighley: That is, trailers and announcements related to games we already know about, rather than earth-shattering reveals of unannounced games. Keighley recently hopped onto a Twitch Q&A session for some «expectation setting» for this year's presentation. According to Keighley, while the 2-hour showcase will have plenty of trailers to show, it'll mostly consist of «existing games that have new updates for fans»—new content for released games, or trailers for games that have already been announced. «This is not a show that has a lot of like, 'coming in 2026' or '2027' or teasers for games that are years and years out,» Keighley said. We do already know some of what we'll see at SGF on Friday—I am, as always, looking forward to more Monster Hunter Wilds previews—and Keighley said that «there will be, definitely, new announcements,» even if they're not blockbuster reveals. Maybe if the stars align, we'll be lucky enough for a back-to-back Nic Cage appearance. Anything can happen if you dare to dream. Keighley was pretty candid in saying that if you're looking for the huge surprise announcements, you're more likely to find those at the other tentpole of the Keighleyverse: The Game Awards at the end of the year, when—unlike in the summer—the major publishers don't always have their own events for big reveals. As a result, Keighley said the Game Awards «has a lot of usually big surprises,» while SGF is «largely focused on announced stuff.» Luckily, if you're worried that you'll be left hungry for game previews, there are plenty of other showcases running throughout the week. Check out our SGF 2024 schedule for the full preview event lineup, including our own PC Gaming Show, airing at 1pm PDT on Sunday, June 9.

Team Fortress 2 players gather over 140,000 petition signatures in the latest campaign against the ongoing aimbot menace

17 years after release, Team Fortress 2 still has a devoted fanbase—one that keeps the classic team shooter in the upper echelons of Steam's concurrent player rankings. And today, through an online petition for the #SaveTF2 campaign, over 140,000 members of that fanbase are declaring they've had enough. TF2 has a long-standing bot problem. Official matchmade servers are rancid with bots, and they aren't just headshotting your team's Heavy with inhuman precision or flooding in-game chat with hate speech.

Destiny's famed 'lore daddy' releases a 10-hour history recap, with 12,000 people tuning in for the live premiere

Destiny's storytelling and worldbuilding has come a long way since the days of grimoire cards, but that hasn't necessarily made the lore any easier to keep track of. Destiny 2 is a game dense with proper nouns, and it only gets denser: Each season and expansion piles on more in-game lore books and implication-heavy item descriptions, any one of which could eventually become a focus for the ongoing story. Luckily, we've got tireless Destiny lore YouTubers like My name is Byf, affectionately titled «Lore Daddy» by his many pupils, to keep all our story-relevant space orbs in order. And don't get it twisted: those orbs take a hell of a lot of ordering. Byf's latest Destiny story recap, released today with a live premiere, clocks in at a healthy nine hours—roughly a third of which I'd guess involves cataloging the setting's various Shapes of Cosmic Importance. Clearly, there's an eager audience for it. As Byf tweeted around two hours into the video's live premiere, nearly 12,000 people were watching to brush up on their Destiny lore mastery in time for The Final Shape.

The latest overnight survival game fixation blends a Mesoamerican theme, Bionicle masks, and the occasional Destiny guy

At this point, it's one of life's regular occurrences: You buy groceries each week, you pay rent each month, and somewhere in between you'll wake up in the morning to see tens of thousands of people are playing a survival game you hadn't heard of when you went to bed the night before. Soulmask, which hit Early Access today, seems it's the newest offering to sate our boundless hunger for base-building and resource foraging. At time of writing, there are 31,000 viewers watching Soulmask on Twitch, putting it ahead of every other survival crafting game that isn't called Rust or Minecraft.

Brand synergizing strikes again as Destiny 2 gets D&D crossover cosmetics, but dammit, I do kind of want the owlbear sparrow

I'm conflicted. On one hand, the just-revealed Dungeons & Dragons crossover cosmetics for Destiny 2 evoke the same «sensory whiplash» that Morgan Park described back in November when writing about shooter skin collabs. On the other, my Titan would look rad riding an Owlbear. Who among us doesn't enjoy an occasional sip from the homogenizing slurry of brand synergy? Given our post-Baldur's Gate 3 world and Wizards of the Coast's recent fondness for Magic: The Gathering crossover collaborations, these Faerûn-inspired armor sets were probably on somebody's Destiny 2 comarketing bingo card. When the cosmetics arrive alongside The Final Shape in June, you'll be able to buy a suit of high fantasy draconic plate armor for Titans, a cyberpunk-styled take on D&D's displacer beast for Hunters, and a set of mind flayer-themed robes for Warlocks—complete with a tentacle-heavy helmet. Sincere congratulations to anyone who can successfully style that last one.

Todd Howard says he's never seen anything like the '4-6x increase in daily players' the Fallout games got from the show: 'It's a really, really unique moment'

I'm told war never changes, but its popularity certainly fluctuates—and sometimes it spikes, if you can leverage the power of Walton Goggins. In an interview with Variety, Todd Howard said the Fallout games are enjoying a swell of player attention thanks to the Amazon TV series.

After trying to branch out during the pandemic, Discord's refocusing on the 90% of users who play games: 'We've recognized the need to narrow our focus'

On Discord's official blog, CEO Jason Citron has declared a bold new vision for Discord that, actually, is a lot like the old vision. After its recent years chasing the widest possible user base, Citron says Discord is returning to its original vision: being a place where you hang out while playing games.
