Part of the Nintendo Switch’s appeal is its versatility — you can play it at home on your TV or on the go in portable mode. This versatility also applies to multiplayer and the best co-op games, which can be played with single Joy-Con controllers, in tabletop mode, and wirelessly both online and locally. Better yet, many of the best Switch games are also cross-platform games between other consoles and PCs.
We were first introduced to the world of Halo with the launch of the Xbox in 2001. That one game became an instant classic and one of the best original Xbox games ever made, allowing Xbox to compete with the likes of PlayStation and Nintendo. Thanks to the massive universe that game set up, plus the ending teasing more to the Master Chief’s story, it was only a matter of time before we got more Halo games. Over 20 years later, there are about a dozen games in the series, but only five are numbered. If you were to simply follow the mainline games, you would be missing out on huge swaths of the story.
The PlayStation 3 had a rough start. The price was high, and there weren’t all that many great games compared to the best Xbox 360 games. The original The Last of Us ended ambiguously, but didn’t necessitate a sequel. However, Neil Druckmann and the team at Naughty Dog felt there were more stories to tell in that world, resulting in the equally impressiveThe Last of Us Part 2. Unlike the first game, though, the sequel left many questions unanswered that demanded at least one more installment.
If there’s one sign we can take from the unprecedented number of layoffs across the games industry these past two years, it’s that we’re in the midst of an identity crisis. The industry isn’t in any danger of crashing, but publishers and studios are now being forced to adapt to the new market in ways they may never have had to before. The two major strategies seem to be falling back to the safety of established IP, and rolling the dice in the hopes of launching a successful live-service game. The latter has been attempted by just about every big player in the space, from EA to Xbox, but very few have managed to siphon off a big enough audience from the established titles to last any meaningful length of time.
BioWare has had a rough few years. Following the critical and commercial success of Dragon Age: Inquisition, the studio moved on to Mass Effect: Andromeda and Anthem, two games that abandoned the tenets of previous BioWare titles under mounting publisher pressure.
When Bioshock came out in 2007, it blew expectations out of the water. Not only did it introduce us to the memorable world of Rapture deep below the sea, but it pulled off one of the most shocking plot twists in gaming history. The sequel stuck to the same setting, but Infinite once again invited us to a brand new dystopia floating in the clouds. Similar to Assassin’s Creed, these games have become defined by their settings, which is why we have all been eagerly awaiting the next entry to see what fantastic space we would be exploring. While original creator Ken Levine has moved on to Judas, 2K has had Cloud Chamber Studios working on a new entry since 2019. For years, Valorant was one of the best PC games and an exclusive to that platform. Due to the game requiring twitch reflexes and pinpoint aiming to land those critical headshots, many assumed it would never come to consoles. It may have taken a while, but Valorant is now playable on both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Given that players on those systems will be using controllers instead of keyboard and mouse, PC players might be wondering if they will have a host of easy targets coming into the game. That would only be true if Valorant makes it onto our list of all cross-platform games, though.
