NASA's latest speed test logs its laser-based comms system at 25 Mbps—a connection speed usually good for online gaming—over millions of miles through our solar system

Lasers—pretty cool, eh? NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) had previously figured out to use lasers to beam a video of Taters the cat through space to the Psyche spacecraft, which at the time was around 30 million kilometres away. For Americans and Brits, that's really far away in miles. Today, however, JPL has figured out it can use lasers to communicate with that same craft now that it's over seven times further away and still score a 25 Mbps connection.

Manor Lords seems surprisingly stable for an early access game, and the developer says: '99% crashes so far are old drivers'

The game of the moment? The medieval city builder, Manor Lords, of course. The game burst into early access over the weekend and has so far sold over one million copies on Steam. Moreover, it reached a high point for strategy games at over 170,000 players playing at once. With figures like that, for a game in early access, I've come to expect reports of performance issues. Yet there have been surprisingly few. Of those, the developer says, most ending up in a system crash are the result of outdated drivers.

Noctua teases 'something new' that looks very much like the desk fan prototype it's had on show before

Here I am genuinely curious as to what Noctua, a company that specialises in making fans, is cooking up. Over on the company's official X account, the company has teased «something new is coming…» with a short teaser video showing what it might be. From that, it's not entirely clear what we're looking at, but it's certain not to be one of its usual beige and brown fans.

This mega-ultrawide OLED gaming monitor was too hot to handle at MSRP but it's just cooled off to $1,000

Gigabyte Aorus CO49DQ | 49-inch | QD OLED | 5120 x 1440 | 144 Hz | 0.03 ms response time | $1,099.99$999.99 at Amazon (save $100) Just mere months ago this extreme gaming monitor was going for $1,300. Now Gigabyte is practically giving it away at $1,000. Just joking, I'm not that out of touch. I couldn't afford this gaming monitor myself, it's a helluva lot of money, but you won't find a cheaper 49-inch QD OLED panel from Samsung or Asus just yet.

HyperX Cloud III Wireless review

The HyperX Cloud III Wireless offer a more affordable alternative to the HyperX Cloud Alpha Wireless we recommend as the best wireless gaming headset. For many PC gamers, that's likely to be a tantalising offer. However, the Cloud III and Cloud Alpha are very different headsets, and I'm not entirely convinced by this cheaper unit.

The operating system powering Meta's Quest headsets is going to be released to third-party hardware makers. The newly-named Meta Horizon OS is built on the foundations laid for today's most popular VR headsets, and includes new tools and frameworks for utilising features we've come to expect from Quest headsets into new, original designs.

New rules to massively strengthen EU's right to repair successfully pass through European Parliament with 584 votes for, just 3 against

The European Parliament has just adopted new rules making the right to repair much stronger across EU member states. The new rules not only give consumers a hand in requesting support for repairing items from manufacturers but also crack down on ways to block third-party repairs. All of which should see everything from laptops to vacuum cleaners to iPhones become much easier to fix, saving having to buy a new one.
