One commonly accepted reason as to why Link is shown to barely talk is simply due to the fact that he has been the player character in countless games, simply serving as an avatar for people to project themselves onto. Lueberry then goes on to reveal that Link was among a group of kids in Suthorn Village that fell into one of the many mysterious rifts that have sprung up across Hyrule. All who fell into the rift were able to somehow miraculously return home safely, but they all came back changed, having each lost something. While it is not specified as to what exactly each child lost, Lueberry does mention that Link ended up losing his voice while trapped in the rift, rendering him unable to speak.
