Day-One additions are one of the best parts of Xbox Game Pass, with new games launching free for subscribers at the same time as they become more widely available to buy. This selling point has become increasingly central to the identity of the service over time, and considering recent Game Pass price increases, that leverage might now be more important than ever before. Luckily, one September day-one addition could be well-worth the cost to strategy fans, bringing a new remake of an iconic game to the service.
There have been a few small hints that people like poker roguelike Balatro. Our Balatro review score of 91, for instance, the 40,000 Steam reviews that average out to «Overwhelmingly Positive,» and the fact that I put 30 hours into it in a single week—and that was when I was playing the pre-launch demo, not even the full game.
Balatro, the roguelike poker indie game that captured the attention of many players earlier this year, isn’t stopping any time soon. In a Tuesday announcement, developer LocalThunk revealed that a big free update is coming next year.
Balatro, the terrific card game that pushes you to break most of the rules of poker to achieve ever-higher scores, is in line for its first major gameplay update. You'll have to wait until next year for that, but developer LocalThunk promises it will bring «new ideas and strategies to the game.» What's more, it will be a free update «as a token of huge appreciation to the game’s brilliant and passionate community.»
Balatro's solo developer has celebrated two million sales of their roguelike game by announcing three surprises, the first of which is a free "major gameplay update" coming next year.
The next-generation Xbox console has already been featured prominently in several rumors. Over the past year, two leakers have suggested that Microsoft's upcoming console would launch in late 2026, getting ahead of Sony's PlayStation 6 in a repeat of the strategy that turned out to be successful for the Xbox 360.
Square Enix's newest games aren't doing so hot. Without any major releases in the three-month period from April to June, its net sales dropped by 18.4% from the same period last year. Overall, however, the company still made a 250.1% operating profit, largely due to its mobile and MMO games, which means Final Fantasy 14 is one of the main things keeping its «digital entertainment» financials positive.
