Sony has reversed a decision that would have required Helldivers 2 players to link their Steam accounts to PlayStation Network accounts.
After creating a massive kerfuffle by forcing Helldivers 2 PC players to link their Steam accounts to the PlayStation Network, Sony is backing down. The May 6 update will no longer be released and, presumably, the game won't be removed from sale on Steam in 177 countries and territories as reported yesterday.
Helldivers 2 PC players galore as Sony has confirmed that it has canceled the upcoming mandatory Helldivers 2 PSN account linking update.
A few days ago, Sony posted a message to Steam noting that, «Due to technical issues at the launch of HELLDIVERS 2, we allowed the linking requirements for Steam accounts to a PlayStation Network account to be temporarily optional. That grace period will now expire.» That went down well with PC players, who were delighted to be allowed to hand over their personal details to Sony.
Even as members of Helldivers studio Arrowhead Games say that discussions around Sony's controversial PlayStation Network sign in requirement for Helldivers 2 on PC are still ongoing, it looks like the publisher is doubling down on the move, halting sales of the game in countries where it doesn't offer the service.
Helldivers 2 is no longer purchasable via Steam in numerous countries following the news that having a PSN account will become mandatory.
PlayStation 5 samurai slice 'em up Ghost of Tsushima is finally coming to PC on May 16, and with all the sturm and drang around Sony stablemate Helldivers 2 introducing a PSN login requirement, developer Sucker Punch would like to remind us that the mostly single player Ghost of Tsushima will mostly not require that.
The storm over Helldivers 2 introducing a PlayStation Network sign-in requirement doesn't show any signs of slowing down, with the game sitting at a little over 84,000 negative Steam reviews over the past two days at the time of writing. Developer Arrowhead Studios, however, doesn't seem particularly enthused about the requirement either.
