Tequila Works Cancels Game and Lays Off a Few Employees

Spanish game developer Tequila Works has announced with a brief message shared via LinkedIn that they had to cancel an unannounced game and also lay off a few of their employees.

With deep regret, we must inform of the decision to cancel an unannounced game. This tough decision means we will be restructuring the studio to concentrate on the development of only one game. These changes will have an impact to a small number of roles at the studio. This is an incredibly difficult time, and our focus is to provide the support and guidance to those affected.

Tequila Works' portfolio includes Deadlight, The Sexy Brutale, RiMe, Gylt, and Song of Nunu: A League of Legends Story. By far, the most well-received of the bunch is RiMe, which earned a 9 out of 10 score on Wccftech when it launched in May 2017.

RiME does great what it sets out to do: provide an emotional and engaging experience that very few players will be able to forget. As with similar games, however, the Tequila Works developed adventure is not a game for everyone: it is a journey of mystery and self-discovery, a journey that's supposed to make players think, and not only about the puzzles. Those looking for enemies to defeat around every corner will probably end up being disappointed.

After such a long and troubled development, many feared that RiME would be a failure, but Tequila Works proved that there can be light at the end of the tunnel. With peculiar storytelling, varied puzzles, well-crafted platforming elements and gorgeous presentation, RiME can rival with the unique beauty of Team ICO's games.

Needless to say, we hope that the affected employees will soon find a job elsewhere in the industry and that Tequila Works as a whole can promptly bounce back from this setback.
