Playtron hopes to become the Linux-based operating system for gaming across handhelds, laptops, TVs, and, uh, in cars. According to the company, the PlaytronOS will be an improvement over Valve's own Linux-based gaming distro, SteamOS, because it won't be locked to a single storefront: it will be «compatible with every game store and many 3rd party integrations to come.»
Nvidia has announced its latest GPU architecture, Blackwell, and it's filled with upgrades galore for AI inference and a few hints at what might be instore for next-gen gaming graphics cards. In the same breath as its announcement at GTC, major tech companies were also announcing the many thousands of systems they've just snapped up with Blackwell on-board.
There's a new Nvidia architecture in town, and it's a doozy. Blackwell has just been announced by Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang at GTC and will feature inside the ludicrously large B200 GPU. To call them 'GPUs' would technically be wrong, however. They're dual-GPU packages with a total of 208 billion transistors across them. To put that into perspective, the previous must-have compute chips out of Nvidia, the Hopper H200 and H100, has just over 80 billion transistors. An RTX 4090 has 76.3 million. We're looking at over double that with Blackwell, which makes a lot of sense considering it's dual-wielding GPUs and a new chip-to-chip interconnect.
The Asus Zephyrus G14 that earned my pick as the best 14-inch gaming laptop is gone. But don't fret. The stalwart styling of the 2023 G14 may have given way to a newer design for 2024, but it's sleeker, shinier and now includes the very latest AMD Ryzen mobile processors. I dare say the new G14 looks, feels and performs better than ever.

The only slightly strange thing about this machine is the combo of a 1TB NVMe drive and a 4TB HDD, as you'd probably expect a bit more solid state storage on a machine at this price.

Elon Musk has a chatbot. An edgy chatbot, no less. It's called Grok and it's set to go open-source sometime this week. Which bits of the bot will be open to the scrutiny of others isn't entirely clear yet, as Musk has only published his plans in a seven-word post on X. However, the move does appear to have been spurred by Musk's tumultuous relationship with the creator of ChatGPT, OpenAI.
Oregon's state House has just passed by a 42 to 13 margin powerful right to repair legislation that ensures customers can get their stuff fixed anywhere. Once enshrined into state law, which now only requires the signature of the state governor, it will also put limits on parts pairing for all products manufactured from 2025 onwards, which will make it even easier to replace broken parts on haywire electronics without the manufacturer's official consent.
