Going into 2024, I expected a slow year. We were coming off the highs of 2023, and we knew that heavy hitters like Grand Theft Auto 6 were waiting for 2025. I expected a transitional year full of niche hidden gems. Boy was I wrong. This year has nearly matched 2023 already thanks to games like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, and much more. The wild part? 2024 feels like it hasn’t even gotten started yet.

Microsoft unveiled the batch of eight games that will come to the Xbox Game Pass subscription service over the course of the first half of July. It’s a solid lineup featuring quite a few amazing indie games. In particular, Neon White is a standout because it’s one of my favorite indie games of the 2020s, and it’s finally coming to Xbox while launching straight into Microsoft’s subscription service.
As had been previously speculated, Xbox Game Pass is undergoing a new restructure. Previously, Game Pass was praised for giving players a huge collection of titles — including some major day-one releases — for a relatively low monthly price. Over time, the price has seen increases, and a tiered system has been introduced, with Xbox Game Pass Core taking over from Xbox Live Gold to offer online gaming for console players with a smaller catalog of games in September 2023.
Mat Piscatella, executive director of games at consumer tracking firm Circana, posted his monthly analysis of games sales on Monday for May 2024. His findings show that spending on video games and hardware are down 6% compared to May of last year, but overall year-to-date spending is 2% higher. So video game sales are generally stagnant, trending downward.
