Helldivers 2 devs "knew it would be divisive" to put one real person in charge of the war: "It's something that a video game has never done before"

Many Helldivers 2 fans were surprised to learn that the game's wars are being directed by a D&D-style game master named Joel, and some still aren't sure how to feel about it. The devs behind the game say they knew the system was going to be divisive, but it adds a very unique dimension to the battle against the bugs and bots.

Helldivers 2 needed its own D&D-type game master because the co-op shooter "is going to run for a long time, we'd love to see it go for many years"

Helldivers 2 appointed a D&D-style game master in order to keep the game "exciting" for many years to come.

Get back in the war: Helldivers 2 daily orders have returned, and earlier than announced

I do not want to die in a bug-infested hellscape for nothing. If I'm going to get murdered over and over again in Helldivers 2, I better be getting a big stack of medals out of it. Such rewards haven't exactly been pouring in, however, since one of the biggest sources, the daily personal orders, hasn't been working.

'A lot of us are old school MMO players': Dune: Awakening's creative director on how Star Wars Galaxies was a 'huge inspiration' for the new survival game

I'm not sure I've ever heard of a bolder conceit for a game—or a more doomed one—than Star Wars Galaxies' original pitch that almost no one would get to be a Jedi. In the Star Wars films and expanded universe, only a tiny portion of the trillions of people across the galaxy were Force-sensitive, so the developers locked Jedi abilities behind an opaque set of conditions that made becoming a Jedi difficult and mysterious. Eventually the developers were pushed to make becoming a Jedi easier, and in what one of the developers called «the most infamous patch in videogame history,» they turned Jedi into a basic class option. The game was never the same after.

Austin Wood - As Helldivers 2 players died millions of times on planet Mort, D&D-style war master Joel was "watching it all go down" and called it a "thing of beauty" - gamesradar.com

As Helldivers 2 players died millions of times on planet Mort, D&D-style war master Joel was "watching it all go down" and called it a "thing of beauty"

Helldivers 2 players died over 10 million times taking one planet, Mort, from the Automatons last week, and you'd better believe that galactic D&D game master Joel was watching the whole thing from the front row with a bucket of popcorn in one hand and a waving lighter in the other.

Austin Wood - Helldivers 2 got so big that its virtual D&D master Joel needed "emergency" assistance: "He's only one guy, and he was just not sleeping ... sending me messages at 4am" - gamesradar.com

Helldivers 2 got so big that its virtual D&D master Joel needed "emergency" assistance: "He's only one guy, and he was just not sleeping ... sending me messages at 4am"

Helldivers 2's dynamic warfront is being conducted almost exclusively by a single D&D-style game master named Joel, but the co-op shooter's explosive launch has gotten so big that Joel needed "emergency" reinforcements of his own within developer Arrowhead Game Studios.

You're waking up to bad Galactic War news in Helldivers 2 because the bugs and bots don't sleep, says developer Arrowhead's CEO: 'It's a push and pull'

The galactic war in Helldivers 2 proceeds apace, and it sure is fun to watch, from memes about the creek to Veld-induced panic, there's a whole lot happening day by day. The current major order to keep Heeth and Angel's Venture safe is going well, but players are starting to notice something strange. They plug in the hours to defend Super Earth, but when they wake up the next morning, all that progress has gone down the drain. What gives?

Mass Effect the Board Game brings back Shepard and the Normandy crew

With 7 years passed since the last game was released, us Mass Effect fans have spent many an N7 day holding out for another opportunity to return to its sci-fi world. That time has finally come, but maybe not in the format you'd expect. That's right, there's a Mass Effect board game in the works. What's even better is it's coming from Modiphius, a studio with a history of creating some of the best board games that also happen to be adaptations of beloved action RPGs. Taking a look at Elder Scrolls: Call to Arms or their work on the Fallout franchise should give you a good idea of what quality we can expect. Mass Effect the Board Game - Priority: Hagalaz will be a story-focused cooperative experience for 1-4 players. It's designed by Eric M. Lang and Calvin Wong Tze Loon and will be set "during the events of Mass Effect 3." Modiphius has already given some insight into the game's story: "It is the year 2186, and the Reapers have invaded the galaxy. Because the Council ignored Commander Shepard’s warnings, the Citadel Races are overwhelmed and on the verge of losing the war. Aboard the Normandy, Shepard carries out missions to prepare the Crucible, an ancient alien superweapon, for a last-chance attempt to defeat the Reapers." Like the original games, you'll have the freedom to shape your crew's story each time you play: "Card-driven AI and evolving stories respond to your actions – your early choices influence later missions." Hopefully, this'll make for some fun Paragon/Renegade roleplaying.
