The game's setting has one inspiration above all others: Paul Verhoeven's film Starship Troopers, loosely based on the Robert Heinlein novel. The game is packed with references and tributes, and sparked some renewed interest in the movie, with even Casper Van Dien (main character Johnny Rico in Starship Troopers) calling it "really quite wonderful."

While 2018's Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 was always-online, it also didn't have a singleplayer campaign (you could play against bots, but you still needed to be connected to the internet). The 2019 remake of Modern Warfare was the first CoD to be always-online on PC while also having a full singleplayer mode, and it's been that way ever since. Over in Console Land, the singleplayer stuff remained accessible without a constant internet connection, though without your skins and so on. That's not the case for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, which will be always-online for everybody.

The game will feature a premium 'Black Hawk Down' campaign mode and two free-to-play multiplayer modes: the large-scale PvP Havoc Warfare and the extraction shooter Hazard Operations. Following our hands-on preview, we interviewed lead developer Leo Yao, who revealed that the game is entering early access in October with a projected release window in early 2025.
