Oof, the trials and tribulations the CPU market is facing right now… Between Intel CPU stability issues and mass AMD CPU underwhelm, there might seem to be frighteningly little room for optimism. But the rumour mill keeps on churning, as always, and is now spitting out word of even more potential changes for AMD's mid-range 9000-series chips.
If you didn't know anything about Zen 5, you'd think the new Ryzen 9 9950X is a step backwards from its predecessor, the Ryzen 9 7950X. They both have the same number of cores and threads (16 and 32, respectively) and the same total amount of L3 cache (64 MB). The 5.6 GHz boost clock is the same for both and the new chip even has a lower base clock (4.3 vs 4.5 GHz). And yet, the Ryzen 9 9950X is by far the better processor.
AMD already has fine form when it comes to extending the life of the AM4 CPU socket, what with the Ryzen 9 5900XT and Ryzen 7 5800XT chips it announced back in June. Now comes news that there's a new 3D V-cache headed for the socket.
With the retail launch of its Ryzen 9000-series of processors, AMD chose to stagger the releases, with the more affordable Ryzen 5 9600X and Ryzen 7 9700X hitting shelves last week. Now it's the turn of the top-end chips and first up is the $499 Ryzen 9 9900X.

The epitome of these Zen 5 architecture chips has probably been the whole «Zen 5%» meme, referring to a mere 5% (or thereabouts) increase in performance. It's not that these new chips are bad—far from it—they're just not good enough for the cost.
