High refresh, not so high price: This 240 Hz Acer Predator Helios gaming laptop is a bit of a beast for $1,450

Acer Predator Helios Neo 16| RTX 4070 | Core i9 14900HX | 16-inch | 1600p | 240 Hz | 16 GB DDR5 | 1 TB SSD | $1,699.99 $1,449.99 at Best Buy (save $250)This Acer might not be the slimmest of models, but it's got some specs that should make you look twice. Alongside a proper 140 W RTX 4070 sits one of Intel's fastest mobile CPUs, in tandem with a blazing fast 240 Hz IPS display. It's a little chonky, and the branding is less than subtle, but there's a lot of grunt here inside that substantial chassis. It's likely to get loud though, what with a 24-core CPU sitting next to that full-fat GPU.

'This really doesn't look promising': Concord PC players are having a hard time finding matches thanks to ridiculously low player counts

During Concord's early access, it was pretty hard for PC players to find games without queuing in console lobbies. At the time, I gave Concord the benefit of the doubt, deciding to chalk it up to a slow early access. Unfortunately, things haven't gotten better since the game became available for everyone.

MSI's X870 and X870E motherboards come with an auxiliary 8-pin power connector, which could indicate some scary next-gen GPU power consumption levels

MSI has unveiled its upcoming X870 and X870E motherboard range at Gamescom 2024. Cowcotland visited MSI's booth and noticed an interesting addition to these boards. It seems all of them featured an 8-pin PCIe power connector located at the bottom of the boards. But why, you might ask?

Microsoft softens language about killing off the Control Panel, but it's still clearly gonna kill off the Control Panel

Using Windows feels like a constant negotiation with a hostile and unstable terrorist whom I paid for the privilege, so I was ready to get up in arms about it formally «deprecating» the Control Panel in favor of the newer Settings menu. But then, as reported by Ars Technica, Microsoft softened its words, if not the meaning behind them, and more to the point, I don't think the big M is really doing anything wrong—this time.

If you're gaming with a Zen 5 system, you'll bag some major performance gains from the upcoming Windows 11 24H2 update

Back when AMD previewed the Zen 5 architecture, it promised an IPC gain averaging 16% over equivalent Zen 4 parts. While the new chips handily beat out the older ones in heavily threaded benchmarks, the gains were smaller in games. That led to some criticisms, with many gamers believing the new chips didn't offer enough to tempt them to upgrade.

'This game is going to easily—and I mean easily—take over': Major streamers, early fans, and esports players share their Deadlock hype after Valve opens the floodgates

Late last Friday, after spending months pretending that its worst-kept secret didn't exist, Valve revealed Deadlock to the world. The official announcement came with Valve's blessing for public discussion, meaning that streamer takes, fan sites, and social media conversations could finally reference the third person shooter MOBA's closed alpha test in the open. Now that speaking its name isn't a thought crime, notable Deadlock players are telling us their takes—and a lot of them think Valve's lining up another hit.

Descending is a free Iron Lung-style horror game where you drill a giant borehole for the glory of your country

I love a shortform horror game about doing a practical job under impractical conditions, by which I mean I loved David Szymanski's terrifying submarine adventure Iron Lung. The procedure, the claustrophobia, the fact it wrapped up in less than an hour, it's a fantastic example of surgically precise game design (and how to scare the bejesus out of me).
