EA and Full Circle Games shared another development update for skate., the long-awaited new entry in the skateboarding game series. While they still aren’t committing to a release window for the full game yet, we did learn that console playtests will begin later this year, in the fall. We also received a thorough overview of what to expect from the final release.

As I played through a demo of Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn, a fast and furious new action RPG, I felt a small yearning. I’m still waiting for the Soulslike genre to have its Spelunky moment.
Replaced reminds of me a lot of Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2, in a good way. Ninja Theory’s latest was a visual spectacle with extremely cinematic combat and gorgeous setpieces that I won’t be forgetting anytime soon. While Hellblade 2 did that with Unreal Engine 5, Replaced is going to do that with pixel art.
Starcraft was once the king of the real-time strategy (RTS) genre, but as Activision Blizzard has made a move away from that genre and Starcraft as a whole, a massive vacuum has been left if you don’t enjoy multiplayer online battle arenas like League of Legends. That’s where Stormgate comes in.
The next Xbox Games Showcase is finally upon us, and it’s an important one for Microsoft. It needs to restore faith in Xbox as a brand in the middle of a tumultuous year that has been full of layoffs, studio closures, and the genesis of a multiplatform approach that had divided the fanbase. Thankfully, Xbox has a lot of neat-looking games coming later this year to show, including Avowed and Indiana Jones and The Great Circle.
Heading into my demo of Metaphor: ReFantazio at Summer Game Fest Play Days, I was concerned that I wouldn’t be able to glean much from 45 minutes of playtime. While all of its trailers have been visually striking, I hadn’t really gotten a sense of how it played and wondered if Atlus and Studio Zero had gone too far with visual flair following the positive response to Persona 5’s user interface. Thankfully, Metaphor: ReFantazio felt more familiar than I’d expected.
Helldivers 2 is one of 2024’s breakout gaming hits, but it’s finally getting some competition from the franchise it is heavily inspired by. Offworld’s Starship Troopers: Extermination, a co-op shooter based on the satirical sci-fi franchise, will exit early access on PC and launch for both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S this October.
