Obsidian's next RPG Avowed won't have the option to do 'a pure pacifist run'

Discovering just how many pacifist choices you could make in the original Fallout was a delight, because not only were you allowed to talk or sneak your way out of problems, but the game recognized you were doing that and rewarded you for it. Subsequent RPGs and immersive sims sprinkled peaceful options in, but an entirely pacifist playthrough often ends up being a masochistic challenge that feels more like you're breaking the game than playing it. Just have a look how much of a hassle it is beating The Outer Worlds as a pacifist.

Baldur's Gate 3 speedrunner reverse-pickpockets a boss to teleport to the dev room, defeats another boss with 'Shadowbear'

You may be familiar with Baldur's Gate 3 speedrun tricks like shadowboxing, which is where you kill Shadowheart and stuff her in a box as a way of skipping through a substantial part of the game. Which is honestly a bit of a rough way to treat God's favorite princess and the most interesting girl in the world. Shadowheart gets some comeuppance in a technique used by Mae, the speedrunner who holds the current world records for any%, all acts%, and sex%. Let me introduce you to the Shadowbear.

Painting of sailing ships in the anime Attack on Titan is actually a screenshot from Total War: Empire

Call me a wannabe-aboo if you want, but I've never seen Attack on Titan. All I know is that it's the one about naked giants who eat people. Apparently, in between being gobbled up like Saturn's son, the characters find time to visit a fancy restaurant. Given the task of filling the backgrounds for that scene, someone put a screenshot of some sailing ships from Total War: Empire in a frame and knocked off for the day.

Ars Magica, the pioneering 'oops all wizards' tabletop RPG, is getting a Definitive Edition

First published in 1987, Ars Magica is a tabletop RPG set in a version of medieval Europe where magic is real and all the player-characters are wizards. Well, technically. One of the novel ideas of Ars Magica was «troupe-style play» in which every player created multiple characters, playing different ones as the story dictated. You might be a powerful wizard of the Order of Hermes one week, then one of their menial sidekicks called «grogs» the next.

They're making a story-driven sequel to Lunar Lander, the 1979 Atari arcade game where all you do is land on the moon

As someone who grew up with an Atari 2600 it sure is nice to be able to talk about an upcoming Atari game with positive anticipation. That's how I feel about Lunar Lander Beyond, a forthcoming sequel to a game so old it's developed a pot belly and taken up jogging.

Magic: The Gathering meets crime fiction in Murders at Karlov Manor

Since the end of the Phyrexian Invasion, which was basically the Avengers: Endgame of Magic: The Gathering, the card game's expansions have hopped between some different genres of fiction. We had one set themed around fairytales and legends, and another based on pulp adventure in a jungle full of dinosaurs and pirates. Next we're going back indoors for a set themed around crime fiction called Murders at Karlov Manor, a kind of Agatha Christie take on Magic where Hercule Poirot isn't a mercurial Belgian, but is instead a wizard and maybe an elf.

Facebook rejects ads for popular board game Votes for Women: '[It] may impact the outcome of an election or pending legislation'

Votes for Women is a board game about the women's suffrage movement in the late 19th and early 20th century USA. It's both a card-driven strategy game and an educational tool to teach players about the struggle to ratify the 19th Amendment, and it proved popular enough that the first edition sold out. Historical board game publisher Fort Circle is currently crowdfunding a second edition on Kickstarter, which it tried to advertise on Facebook. «Tried» being the important word.
